The Paradise Chapter of Career Builders / counter recruitment had their first event, tabling, at "Back to School Night" at Paradise High School recently.  Hooray for Sue and her friends that thought enough of the kids in her community to offer them alternatives to the military.  The event went well.  May there be may more.

9/11 2015 Demonstration of Truth

Thanks to Peter, Page, Rain and Steve for all their help in pulling off our Chico response to 9/11 2015.  Rain Googled and painted up a storm of inspirational and motivational quotes  on cardboard.  Thanks to Peter's encouragement and help we dusted of six old 9/11 Peace Panels loaded up some easels and set up a "demonstration of truth" that occupied all four corners of the Plaza.  We got some great reactions from the passers-by.  Peter and friends put on a Food Not Bombs free food extravaganza to round out the event.  Chico Peace & Justice Center, Food Not Bombs, the Peace Panel P

To the Farmer's Market and beyond

We are getting better:  More volunteers; improving our message; engaging more people; and a new pitch: "TREES FOR KIDS!".  You should have seen us at the Farmer's Market last Saturday.  Introducing people to the Better World Shopping Guide, Ruses for War, Nonviolent Communication, Project Censored and Chico Tree Advocates.  Some volunteers and old classmates showed up to help spread the word.  A teacher asked me to come to his class to speak on the health of Chico's urban forest.  Things were going along really well, in spite of the windy conditions that were threatening to blow me over a time or two until, a woman showed up. With another sad story of many large trees just cut down, next to where she lived: East First Avenue and Downing Avenue.  (I guess the new owners of the old Congregational Church decided they had eight too many trees on the property.)  How sad.  Eight beautiful large trees, that shaded their building, their parking lot and Downing Avenue are gone.  I went in and introduced myself to the new minister, Gary Hamilton, to express my sadness at the loss of the eight great trees to the neighborhood and to offer him free trees from Chico Tree Advocates.  He was grateful.  We agreed to talk later.  I suggest if you are concerned about the future of Chico's urban forest that you contact that new minister and tell him that you are sad about the loss of the trees that used to grace his property.  We feel that they were a community asset that is lost.  So now, let's work together, to plant new saplings of large tree species to help build our urban forest canopy.  Let's encourage him,

to plant as many trees as possible near the sidewalk to shade our Avenues; Be like Chico.

Trees For Kids

The Peace Panel Project was pitching “trees for kids” at the Farmer's Market this last Saturday. Underneath the old magnolia tree we introduced people to Better World Shopping Guide, Project Censored, Ruses for War, Nonviolent Communication and Chico Tree Advocates. We sold some books and handed out brochures. We even sold a Chico Peace & Justice Center raffle ticket for a Mexican Getaway, for the drawing at the Annual Dinner October 16. The highlight of the day was when my daughter, Camille, came by with mini cup cakes for peace. The booth was a lot more popular as long as they lasted.

Farmer's Market 8-8-15

We had a good day at the Farmer's Market.  Sold some books, signed up some Tree  Advocate volunteers and were serenaded by some great musicians.  We featured Chico Tree Advocates (and handed out Annie B quarter sheets) Non Violent Communication,  Ruses for War, and Better World Shopping Guide.  Inspired some activism.
